Drinking vs. Drunkenness

This past weekend all roads led to the beautiful and warm city, Durban. The who’s who of South Africa gathered for the Durban July. Every year we see people from various industries come together for the event that is not only about the horse racing but about fashion, food, music and socialising. The main event is followed by after parties. This year I think the two biggest ones were the Mother of all parties and the Fact! Durban Rocks. Driving past Moses Mabhida on Saturday night proved to be a mission due to the number of cars and people attending.

I then started thinking; these types of events are associated with alcohol. Now, what I wanted to know was whether it is fine or not for Christians to drink? I was brought up believing that Christians don’t drink but I have heard lots of people state that drinking is not a sin but that being drunk is.

What is your view?

I took to the Bible to see what it says about this. Galatians 5:21 states, “drunkenness and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” There does not appear to be a verse that states that drinking is a sin.

I think this one might not be black or white but will be influenced by factors such as upbringing and values. The rules that govern our communities and country can also be considered eg we all know that drunken driving is illegal.

I’m not sure what your stance is about this but I would just remind you that your body is the temple of God so before you do anything, consider that.

Cheers or maybe not.
